Copyright 2014 Jason Barnette Construction began on Fort Sumter in 1829, but was still unfinished in 1861 when the Civil War began. On April 12, 1861 Confederate batteries opened fire on Fort Sumter, marking the first shots fired during the Civil War. Today Fort Sumter is part of the Fort Sumter National Monument which includes the fort, the Fort Sumter Education Center, and Fort Moultrie.
