The Morris Island Lighthouse near Folly Beach, SC on Thursday, November 28, 2013. Copyright 2013 Jason Barnette In 1873 the Congress approved funds to build the Morris Island Lighthouse, completed in 1876. During the end of the 1800's the channel leading into Charleston Harbor began to shift (for the second time), threatening traffic leading to the port city. A series of jetties were built along Folly Island which saved the channel, but had the side affect of eroding Morris Island. Since 1938 over 1600 feet surrounding the lighthouse has been lost. The Morris Island Lighthouse Project is an effort to preserve and restore the lighthouse.
